There is a twelve-hour flight difference between Hong Kong and the UK, but it is difficult to adjust to the challenges of cultural differences within 12 hours. In Hong Kong, we are focused on effectiveness. Not only do we act quickly, but we also pay attention to details, with a plan B for everything. Once a job commitment is made, we do our best to deliver. We get used to working hard to earn a better bonuses and salary increases. This is a culture that most Hong Kongers are proud of. However, I sometimes question whether this culture is beneficial here.
In the UK, not only are different English words or phrases used to convey the same meaning, but the driving habits is also different. If you happen to meet a local British person who checks with you about event arrangements or logistics, you are indeed very lucky. A plan B here is often a delay or even cancellation. Even if you are unemployed, I believe most Hong Kongers have encountered different frustrations with so-called top-tier local builders. No matter how many emails you send, they still ignore or disappear. I had the chance to discuss this with some local British technicians; they said it was common for builders to reject all the requests at first. However, they will eventually give in if we keep pushing them. They agreed that the process is painful. The two-year warranty period provided by builders may feel like a training for most Hong Kongers.
Indeed, the local British people also face challenges. Apart from language barrier, most of them cannot understand why we are so serious, why we have so many requests, why we need to act so fast, and why we are so direct in the communication. I am grateful to serve in an environment full of love. Although I still have many questions, everyone is trying hard to understand each other and grow together. I still appreciate the culture of encouragement here. Besides, most of the local British people are open-minded and willing to accept new things and people. Without their excellent tradition, I believe we would experience even more difficulties.
Everyone is unique
in God’s eyes, with different gifts. For this reason, the church has the ability
to face different people in the world. “Therefore go and make disciples of all
nations..” (Matthew 28:19)
